Choices
To help teens improve their health habits and develop a greater understanding of abstinence education, the Cooperative Extension Program (CEP) at Prairie View A&M University annually hosts a Choices Retreat at the H. S. Estelle 4-H & Youth Camp in Huntsville, Texas.
Annually three million teens, approximately one out of every four, contract a sexually transmitted disease increasing the possibility of contracting AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the sixth leading cause of death among persons aged 15-24 in the United States.
The Choices retreat focuses on informing youth of abstinence education through panel discussions, workshops, interactive activities and group performances. Participants attend workshops on self respect and respect of others, preventing sexually transmitted infections, teen pregnancy, love vs. lust, dating etiquette, misconceptions of oral sex and condom use, the role of drugs and alcohol in premarital sex and obesity and weight management. These workshops will equip them with information needed to make healthy lifestyle choices.
It is crucial to provide opportunities to assist youth in receiving correct information to minimize risky behaviors and maximize opportunities for promising and healthy futures.
