USDA Assistant Secretary of Civil Rights to Speak at
Landowners Association of Texas 25th Annual Conference

HUMBLE, TX – The Landowners Association of Texas is hosting its 25th annual conference on October 8-9 at the Humble Civic Center in Humble, Texas. The Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M University is co-hosting the event.

“This conference promises to be informative and enlightening for our participants,” said Dr. Freddie L. Richards, dean, College of Agriculture and Human Sciences and administrator, Cooperative Extension Program.  “One of the highlights of the conference is the appearance and keynote address of Dr. Joe Leonard, USDA Assistant Secretary of Civil Rights. Dr. Leonard has been a long time proponent of equal rights and opportunities for minority landowners.”

The theme of this year’s conference is The Effects of the Farm Bill on Farmers and Ranchers Surviving and Profiting During Slow Economic Times.  “To help the farm producers, ranchers and landowners  become more profitable, we are offering a proposal writing session,” said Billy Lawton, program specialist, Agriculture and Natural Resources with the Cooperative Extension Program. “This session will enable the participants to become more knowledgeable and qualified in securing grant monies and implementing farm and landowner practices.”

A banquet honoring the founders of the Landowners Association of Texas will be held Thursday, October 8th at the Humble Civic Center.

Registration fee, which includes conference materials and the banquet, is $45 per person before September 19th and $55 after that date. Contact Billy Lawton at 936/261-5117, bclawton@ag.tamu.edu for more information.
