Daniels Selected for 2009-10 Class of Food Systems Leadership Institute Fellows
PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – Dr. Nelson T. Daniels, associate administrator of the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M University, is among 18 leaders selected to Fellows of the Food Systems Leadership Institute (FSLI) for 2009-2010.
The new FSLI Fellows are beginning a two year program that is designed for experienced leaders who are engaged in the sometimes diverse segments of the food system.
“I am very excited about my participation in FSLI, which gives me the chance to respond to a changing food system,” said Daniels. “The boundaries and definitions for the food system are continually expanding. What was once seen simply as food production and distribution has grown to encompass nutrition, medicine, biotechnology, the environment, rural communities, and a host of emerging issues surrounding a complex system.”
FSLI Fellows participate in a rigorous leadership development experience that focuses on personal leadership skills, leadership for organizational change, and broadening food systems perspectives. The Institute’s objectives for the Fellows are to improve the effectiveness of the individual in any leadership role they undertake, equip the leader to act as an agent of change, and create the vision for change toward a broader, more interdisciplinary and collaborative food system.
Part of the Fellows’ experience is to attend three residential sessions in various locations with the first one starting in October in Raleigh, North Carolina. “We will complete several leadership assessment instruments prior to attending these sessions to help determine our leadership philosophy,” Daniels said.
Daniels, a native of Crockett, Texas, has moved through the ranks serving in every level of the Cooperative Extension Program since 1990 starting as a county Extension agent - Agriculture, program specialist- Agriculture, and program leader – Agriculture and Natural Resources before taking on the role of associate administrator in 2006.
Daniels received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Education respectively from Prairie View A&M University and his doctorate degree in Agricultural Education from Texas A&M University.
The Food Systems Leadership Institute was formed through the partnership of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. North Carolina State University is responsible for operating the FSLI, along with partners at The Ohio State University and University of Vermont.
